Adding Analytics to Sendowl, Gumroad
In the interest of updating out files on them, I want to mention that each has a way for you to incorporate the usage of their apps into your Google Analytic reporting. This is very useful as you track your site’s user behaviors to see what’s working and what’s not.
Enter your Google Analytics ID number in the Advanced section of your Gumroad settings. Click on the gear-looking icon on the far-right of the top menubar and then scroll to the bottom. (For more information, click here.) For more information, visit Gumroad’s page on the topic.
From the SendOwl dashboard, click Account in the right-hand sidebar, then Analytics. You can now enter your Analytics ID.
Once the data begins to propogate (they advise giving it a couple of days), go to Google Analytics and click Behavior in the left-hand sidebar, then Events and then Overview.
You can then drill down from Event Action, which presents the data grouped by its source…
Or you can drill down from Event Label, which treats each event separately…
What’s an ‘event’?
In Analytics, an “event” is a user interaction that can be tracked separate from a pageview. In other words, once the page is loaded onto the Web browser, the user might click the play button on an embedded video. That play-button click is an event. So is clicking stop or pause. All of these are events that happen on the load of a single page.
Likewise with the item you offer as digital merchandise. If you see a number of people clicking on the item and then pathing away without buying, it might tell you that your price is too high. Or it might tell you that there’s something about the user experience that’s off-putting. Using event-tracking can be an excellent guide to how you present merchandise to your readers.
