ProTip: Gumroad discount codes
Here’s a quick Pro Tip that really saved my skin when I started fulfilling Kickstarter rewards that involved free download of digital books.
If you use Gumroad as a digital-distribution provider, you can use their interface to create a coupon code that give the user a discount (full or partial) on the item.
When I did this for The Webcomics Handbook, however, it caused havoc among a certain number of my backers. Although they had earned a completely free book, some entered their credit-card information anyway — and, as a result, were charged for the purchase. Others couldn’t find where to input the code. And still others balked at having to register with Gumroad to complete the transaction — which was an erroneous assumption.
In short, I spent the better part of the week running in circles, putting out fires, and re-explaining my step-by-step instructions.
It was pretty frustrating.
And it could have been completely circumvented by using this one, simple trick:
In Gumroad, if you add the coupon code to the product URL for your item, whomever uses that new URL will be delivered to a page that has that discount already activated.
Once they’re there, it’s a simple question of clicking that big, red “I WANT THIS” button, and the transaction is initiated.
Here’s an example:
This is the URL for the How To Make Webcomics book on Gumroad: https://gumroad.com/l/zKda
This coupon code gives the user a 50%-off discount: webcomicsdotcomexample
If I use this URL, the coupon code is pre-applied and the transaction is a one-click process: https://gumroad.com/l/zKda/webcomicsdotcomexample
