Webcomics.com Poll – Holiday Merchandise
The results of the most recent Webcomics.com poll are in, and it seems that the overwhelming majority of us are choosing against offering special holiday-themed merchandise.
Here are the breakdowns, and a few thoughts:
It seems as if the overwhelming majority of us won’t be creating special merchandise for the upcoming holiday-shopping season — in fact 80% of respondents are begging off.
I think there are probably tons of reasons for this. For starters, it’s an awful lot of fuss for something that may have a limited shelf-life — such as holiday cards or calendars. Secondly, it’s just way too tough to compete with retail giants like Amazon. They dominate the holiday-shopping season, and it’s tough to get one’s message out in the sea advertising. Heck, Amazon started promoting Black Friday on the day after Halloween! Finally, it’s equally beneficial — and way easier — to offer your existing merchandise as potential gift items. In fact, that’s a strategy I have taken over the past few years.
In my menubar, I’ve changed the header that had traditionally read as “BOOKS” to “GIFTS.”
It’s a pretty subtle change, but my philosophy is to capitalize on the fact that many of my readers are going to be searching for unique and original gift ideas. And — hopefully — that word is going to jump out at them.
When they click the menu item, they will be presented with a dropdown of several options:
- Graphic novels
- How-to books
- Shirts, posters, phone cases and more (My Redbubble store)
- And more
The aim is to re-position my usual store offerings as gifts instead of merchandise that someone would purchase for himself or herself.
Working in tandem with this small change will be:
- A series of blog posts highlighting gift-able store items
- A banner for above or below the comic
- Holiday-themed ads to enter the rotation of house ads.
