Webcomics Confidential Ep 2
I wanted to take some of the things I learned in producing the previous vidcast and apply them to the next episode.
But let’s be honest — if I’m going to keep doing these, we need to come up a name for the series. So hit the Comments below with what you think I should call this thing.
This episode…
I discuss the following questions…
- I started back drawing again about a month ago since I had written during the down time but quickly bogged down into dread. So I signed up for an online drawing class, enjoyed it briefly, then lost interest. And then it hit me like a TON of BRICKS! My passion is, and has always been, in the writing. Drawing, for me, is not a relaxing or enjoyable process. My chances of ever making any kind of profit from webcomics is… well- I’d be better off playing the lottery. So if I’m gonna make webcomics- I’d better be enjoying the process, right? My chances of making money off the novels I will publish are slim to start- maybe better once I get cranking- but the kicker is- I’m gonna be writing no matter what because I enjoy it. I have to write. It’s one of the few things that I’m passionate about. My God — it’s a freaking no brainer! I’m a writer!
- I think passion is the key, and you see people in other fields all the time who build a following purely because of their passion and personality. I’ve heard a lot of cases where the “successful project” of artists are when they decompressed, goofed off and came up with something fun and different with no real agenda behind it. Could you maybe speak to that and also how to balance a strong work ethic with that off-the-cuff spontaneous attitude? Dunno if that’s a proper question really but it’s something that’s on my mind so if it sparks some conversation/answer in you I’d love to hear your thoughts
- I have a question for your next update. I know Patreon is the way forward with regard to earning money with webcomics. What kinds of rewards do you notice patrons find more desirable? Is it the connection to the creator, exclusive content, or perhaps physical rewards like a “____ of the month club”?
