Adding an Apple Smart App Banner to your site
Thanks to Webcomics.com member Sarah Frisk, who shared this in the forum:
For people who have their comic accessible via an iOS app, you add “Smart Banner” at the top of your website that only appears in Mobile Safari using a simple meta tag in the <head>
area of your website to help promote the (possibly more mobile friendly) reading experience. The advantages of using the “Smart Banner” to promote the mobile app is that it is easily dismissible, it’s the standard way apple uses to promote apps on a mobile device, and the banner is smart enough to realize if you already have the app – if you do, iOS will provide a link to open the application, rather than find the app in the app store. It is also important to note, that once a user dismisses the smart banner, it won’t continue to pop up every time they go to the site – your iOS device remembers what you did, and keeps it hidden.
For a simple step-by-step tutorial, check out her post in the Private Forum. I’ve added the meta tag on the Evil Inc site that points to the Comic Chameleon app (ID number id640923803), in case you’d like to see the banner in action.
