Writers have to do two things to earn their paycheck: read a lot and write a lot. For comedian writers, therefore, there are two things we have to do: read a lot of humor and write a lot of humor. For cartoonists, here are the important things we have already done: read a lot of comic strips, stored memorable comic strips in our psyche, and written a lot of comic strips to find our voice.
