Based on a presentation I delivered at Chicago Comic Con in August 2013, this is a list of 10 things I think most webcartoonists could do — today — to improve their performance on the Web. This is the first of two parts. The second half features an extended Q&A session.
The general rule for convention signage is simple: Get your message up high. Vertical signage is most likely to be seen — and the higher the better. That’s why one of the oldest Webcomics.com Member Benefits is with BannersNStands, a company that specializes in vertical banner stands. It’s a crucial part of a comic-convention booth display.
The second-most-important convention signage rule is to have all of your products clearly marked with descriptions and pricing. There are a number of ways to do this. I’ve used Post-It notes in the past to affix prices to my merchandise. Colored stickers work well, too.
But exhibiting at Chicago Comic Con this past weekend reminded me of another old favorite…

“No,” he said, “I don’t want a commission… I just want a doodle.”
Try telling a plumber that you don’t want your drain unclogged — instead, you’d like him to come over and just… tinker… with your pipes.
He’ll tell you to turn blue.
I think artists could learn a lot from plumbers.

I hate guest comics.
I hate the whole idea of it. I hate when a creator that I follow posts guest comics, and I hate being asked to do a guest comic. (I’ve one done a guest comic a couple times, and in both cases, I really, really admired the comic.)
As a creator, I’ve never posted guest comics on my site. for me, it comes down to a 100% chance of disappointing my readers. In my mind, it breaks down like this:
• I have a 50% chance of disappointing my readers when the guest comic is a lower quality than my own.
•I have a 50% chance of disappointing my readers when the guest comic is a higher quality than my own.
Either way, I lose.
Worse yet, in a month or so, I imagine someone enjoying my archives and then running headlong into a block of guest comics — completely taking them out of the story. Ugh.
So, what happened this summer when I decided to break with 15 years of daily updates and post on a twice-weekly schedule?

You see it every day — especially if you’re a member of any webcomics-themed Facebook groups. It’s ubiquitous. It’s pointless. It’s almost entirely useless. But more importantly, it belies a huge lack of understanding about the nature of promotion.
It’s cartoonists promoting their work to other cartoonists.

If you are using WordPress to host your site, no matter what plugin or system you use to display your comics, the requirement for the version level of PHP has gone up. This is due to the fact that PHP 5.7 is coming out and a lot of things in older versions of PHP are being deprecated.
