School’s back in session and that means that campus newspapers will once again be rolling off the presses. And that means something very significant to you as a webcartoonist — it’s an opportunity to try your hand at a little self-syndication.

Most people in webcomics stick to Project Wonderful, which is good starting point. But there are so many ad companies out there, which can have a bigger pay out. This can be especially effective when you set up a chain of ad companies. Setting up a “chain” means when the first ad server can’t give you an ad for every page loaded, they offer to pull an ad from another ad company that you’re affiliated with. This is also called a “default.” – as in, “when we can’t serve an ad to your site, who would you like us to default to?” And, provided the second ad server you do business with offers a default option, you can chain to a third, and so on.

Whenever possible, avoid using numerals in your word balloons; write out the word instead.
For example, don’t use “25;” write “twenty five” instead.

Carson Van Osten, a famous Disney artist who did many Disney comic books, created the famous “Comic Strip Artist’s Kit.” It was designed to help beginning comic artists deal with perspective problems and other drawing difficulties. They’re still as rock solid today as they were when he created them in 1975. Enjoy.
