Experimentation: When to Begin?

In the first few months of drawing my comic, I made a joke to my best friend that I hoped critics would look back at my early days as my “wildly experimental days,” and not realize I was still learning how to draw well. But when is a good time to start experimenting with your art? Why not try new things in your early days? If you’re at the beginning of your cartooning career, you probably have to work hard to make your lines neat and your characters look consistent. As a result, you’re probably a bit reluctant to try anything other than the same drawings over and over again. I can even understand being a bit afraid of experimenting, since you don’t know yet know what your limitations are. But if you try something new, you may find a much easier way of drawing something, or even discover a new pose that you love that you want to try more often.
