Charlie BoatnerParticipant
I see a fan comic as somewhere between a fan film and fanfic, in terms of cost and effort. A fan comic could TRY to get crowd funding, but I don’t know how much enthusiasm it would generate. A fan film NEEDS a lot more funding. A fan film generates the crowd excitement of, “hey, let’s put on a show!”
The studios kick back when what was a fan project about their property becomes competition. Your Axanar example gives a model of what to do if challenged: change the characters’ names and the color of their uniforms.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantThe background works. Modern and minimalist is good!
Charlie BoatnerParticipantI’m wondering about the gag organization. Are you relying on the readers to remember which strips they’ve read from visit-to-visit? Where will the new strips appear (I recommended the top)?
It took me awhile to realize that Rose appears at different ages. Is that worth labeling (Archie versus Little Archie)? I’m not sure if I’m seeing two ages or three.
I found the brownie strip predictable while the snack rings strip made me laugh out loud. Interesting, since they’re both about the same subject. Maybe I liked the snack rings because I got to see how her mind works.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantYou may be describing “Intermittent reinforcement”: If a rat gets a treat every time he hits a button for a while, then the behavioral scientist turns off the treats, the rat will stop trying quickly. If the treats appear inconsistently on hitting the button, the rat will continue trying much longer after the treats are cut off.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantI’ve given up on zip and learned to embrace the Dark Adobe. Altho’ that’s a long learning curve, as demonstrated by the adjacent Topic where people are giving me Photoshop tips.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantBrad may be right. The artist in the example may be drawing those specific elements digitally. Joel’s suggestion is intriguing — I’ve not done much with the brush, yet. And Reine’s tutorial looks great! I will have to experiment when I get some Quality Time with PS.
Thank you all!
Charlie BoatnerParticipant(Omigosh, “non-marker!” I guess that’s like a land-line or Slow Food? 🙂 )
Yes, the simplicity of markers is very seductive. If I hadn’t learned dip pen and brush first, I would never have bothered with the messy things. But now, in my eye, there are things one tool does better than the other. (And I do use the Pigma Micron when control is more important than anything.)
Charlie BoatnerParticipantFor creating variety of visual “tone” using only black ink, it’s hard to beat Walt Kelly and his assistants. I’ve taken to staring at Pogo books, sometimes upside down to avoid being distracted by the stories.

Aside to Margaret — I’ve looked and looked and can’t find the plastic sheets with halftones (zipatone, etc.) anywhere. One reference says the last ones were manufactured in the late 1990s.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantThat’s a lotta black, and very well placed! The little bit of color in the doorway works well, too.
Charlie BoatnerParticipantIt sounds like you REALLY wanted to hand something out — I identify. BTW, I agree with Brad on the second batch — being advised against being yourself is funny!
Charlie BoatnerParticipantThere’s some sharp stuff there! I thought the robot foot was great and my being familiar with Bambi meets Godzilla only made it funnier for me. The repeated panels were paced well. The animations of Barney being beaten by the noodle were very effective.
Somehow, despite being familiar with the strip, I find myself expecting the episode to end after the first gag. Maybe make two episodes like these into four?
But what to do with the band, then? Have it/them end the strip rather than provide an interlude? (The cartoons I watched during the cookies-and-milk shows always ended with music and credits.)
Charlie BoatnerParticipantMy site is running and Clay’s template looks great!
Charlie BoatnerParticipantYes, I would like to test your theme project. Hamlet’s Danish has a clean, professional-looking format. My e-mail is above, thanks!

Charlie BoatnerParticipantSo I posted an ad for a web designer (out of the box) in Classifieds, here on Webcomics.com. No nibbles yet.
Is there a bigger, yet still appropriate pond?
Charlie BoatnerParticipantI walk away and flex my hands and stretch my back. Remaining hunched for hours may demonstrate a good work ethic, but I’m not sure it’s healthy in the long run.
